MYNYDD Y GWAIR TOMEN: TUMULUS OR NOT TUMULUS? WHATEVER, THIS NEEDS INVESTIGATING BEFORE DAWNUS/RWE ROAD BULLDOZES AWAY WHAT MAY BE AN ANCIENT MONUMENT - PERHAPS 'BUERIAL MOUND' OF A CELTIC WARRIOR CHIEF>

TUMULUS OR NOT TUMULUS?

I am no expert in these matters but I have been looking into tumulus, whilst archaeolagists have all the professional expertise in such, remember king tut! From Romano Celtic period to Medieval period such 'mounds/motte' were put up in the hundreds in rapid order to defend speedy land grabs, not least by Welsh Princes and Chiefs. Also they often acted as watch towers, made of wood and many were not developed as actual wooden forts or were to become stone castles. Such 'Mounds' were also used for beacons, lit on them for a number of reasons as warnings ans call to gather. Later if and when abandoned wood would be take for fires or whatever and stones for walls or later farm houses. What we are left with is nought but earth mounds, don't expect all to have a chief with treasure buerid within. As to our 'tumulus', thinks. round shape, why there other than fact it stands guardian over further entry to Cwm Dulais and across the mountain, why there is i think the clue is Cwm Dulais (see first foto and you will see what i mean), entry to that means entry to entire Mynydd y Gwair (as important today to Dawnus/RWE road builders). Remember that  Cwm Dulais was well settled way back pre celtic and the ares as a numer of Celtic and pre Celtic sites. Re tumulus by middle ages the Welsh Princes were constantly at war and thus  as soon as land was captured they stuck up tumulus but often did not hold land to give time to build forts and castles whilst the Normans had wooden flat pack castles they could put up very quickly and later much expertise and the money to build stone castles as did in time the English and Welsh too in some instances.

ANY WAY FOOD FOR THOUGHT.

NOTE HOW CLOSE THE ROAD IS GETTING -
SEE SURVAYORS FENCE POSTING.

WE COULD BUILD UP A CAIRN ATOP THE MOUND AS WE DID AT CAERDREWYN. ALL WHO VISIT THIS SITE PLACE A SMALL ROCK ATOP TO CREATE SUCH A CAIRN.

The Tumulus stands a little south of the footpath from Well Walk to Merton Lane. Once thought to be Boadicea's grave, it most certainly isn't!
